Svaroopa ® yoga offers subtle yet profound changes that dissolve the tension at the deepest layers in your body, your spinal muscles. Through a process we call “core opening”, also known as spinal decompression, most students feel relief of (even eliminate) pain, neck and shoulder tension and report a quieter, calmer mind after their very first experience.

A typical class is 90 minutes of well choreographed asana (poses) interwoven with anatomy, philosophy, and a breathing practice. Discover the deeply relaxing, healing, and transformational benefits of Svaroopa ® yoga as you deepen your awareness of the body and cultivate your inner bliss.

New students arrive 15 minutes early to your first class.

Always arrive 5-10 minutes prior to class time to sign in and setup. This allows us to start on time. Your time is valuable and shavasana, yoga’s relaxation pose, is also. So much so that we begin and end each class with this quiet time to cultivate that connection with your inner essence.

Please enter the studio quietly so as not to disturb others.
The studio is fully equipped!
It has all the props you will need. We do not use mats in this style of yoga. Blankets, blocks and chairs-oh my! Meet your new support group.

To eat or not to eat
It is recommended that you practice on an empty stomach allowing at least 2 hours for food to digest prior to class time. On a day where that is just not practical-eat as light a snack or meal as possible. You may find that doing yoga on a full stomach is uncomfortable.

Yoga Journal,
Winter 2000

“This style of yoga teaches different ways of doing familiar poses, emphasizing the opening of the spine by beginning at the tailbone and progressing through each spinal area. Every pose integrates the foundational principles of asana, anatomy, and yoga philosophy, and emphasizes the development of transcendent inner experience, which is called svaroopa by Patajali in the Yoga Sutra. This is a consciousness-oriented yoga that also promotes healing and transformation.”

Svaroopa ® yoga was developed by Rama Berch, who founded and directs Master Yoga Academy and created the yoga program for Dr. Deepak Chopra’s Center for Well Being, both located in La Jolla, California. Berch says teaching asanas became increasingly frustrating, because the students seemed to be trying to “impose the pose upon their body rather unfolding it from within.” She began looking for ways to guide her students to the deeper effects of each asana, speaking of them as “angles that provide opening, rather than poses to be learned.” New students find this a very approachable style, often beginning in chair poses that are comfortable and have a deep healing effect in the spine.
